A joint counterterrorism operation involving Nigerian security forces and the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has reportedly dealt a significant blow to insurgent activities in Nigeria’s North-East.
According to security reports, at least 21 suspected fighters linked to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) were killed during an air strike carried out in the Arege area of Kukawa Local Government Area, Borno State.
The operation was reportedly launched after intelligence and surveillance assets identified the presence of insurgents operating from a camp believed to be serving as a planning base for attacks across communities within the Lake Chad region.
Security sources cited in reports said the strike specifically targeted militants allegedly preparing fresh operations in the area.
According to the report, the precision strike resulted in the elimination of 21 fighters and significantly disrupted the group’s operational capabilities.
The mission is said to be part of broader efforts by Nigerian security agencies and international partners to weaken terrorist networks operating within the Lake Chad Basin and the wider North-East region.
Military sources reportedly described the operation as intelligence-driven, noting that extensive surveillance preceded the strike to ensure accurate targeting.
The development comes amid continued military offensives against insurgent groups operating in Borno and neighbouring states.
Security analysts believe sustained pressure on terrorist hideouts has made it increasingly difficult for armed groups to regroup and launch large-scale attacks.
The latest operation also highlights growing security cooperation between Nigeria and international partners in tackling terrorism and insurgency.
Reports indicate that the strike followed another recent operation in Borno State in which more than 20 suspected ISWAP and ISIS-linked fighters were reportedly neutralised during coordinated military action.
Authorities have yet to issue a comprehensive official assessment of the latest operation, but security observers say continued intelligence-sharing and joint operations remain critical to efforts aimed at restoring stability in the region.
For communities around the Lake Chad Basin, the hope is that sustained operations against insurgent camps will reduce attacks and improve security for residents who have lived under the threat of terrorism for years.
