The Benin Traditional Council has issued a strong warning following an incident involving popular social media influencer Habeeb Hamzat Adelaja, widely known as Peller, over what it described as an unauthorised visit to the Oba of Benin’s palace.
In a statement signed by the Council’s Secretary, Frank Irabor, the incident was labelled a “serious breach of protocol and desecration of the sacred precincts of the Palace.”
Unauthorized Entry Sparks Outrage
According to the council, Peller allegedly gained access to the palace on March 6, 2026, during his nationwide tour without obtaining the necessary approval.
The statement read in part:
“Mr Adelaja and his entourage entered the palace without the requisite permission, and their subsequent conduct caused significant embarrassment and a breach of the peace within the palace grounds.”
The council stressed that the palace is a sacred institution and not a place for casual or entertainment-related activities.
“The palace is not a public thoroughfare or a location for frivolous content creation; it is the ancient and spiritual seat of the Oba of Benin,” the statement added.
Disciplinary Actions Already Underway
Following a preliminary investigation, the council confirmed that sanctions have already been imposed on individuals connected to the incident.
A chief allegedly linked to the breach has been suspended indefinitely. In addition, a palace staff member identified as Mr Omuemu has been detained by the Nigeria Police Force and charged in court for allegedly facilitating the unauthorised entry.
Queen Faces Possible Removal
In a more serious development, a queen who appeared in the controversial incident is currently undergoing disciplinary proceedings.
The council disclosed that the outcome could lead to her removal from the palace in line with Benin customs and traditions.
“In accordance with Benin traditions and customs, these proceedings may result in her removal from the palace,” the statement noted.
Peller Yet to Respond to Summons
The council further revealed that Peller has been invited to appear before a committee of chiefs to explain his actions but has failed to honour the invitation.
“Mr Adelaja has failed to honour this invitation. He must tender an unreserved written apology to the palace for his unauthorised access and the embarrassment caused,” the council stated.
It warned that failure to comply could result in legal action, adding that law enforcement agencies have already been notified.
Council Reaffirms Authority
Reaffirming its commitment to preserving tradition, the council emphasized its authority under the leadership of the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II.
“While unscrupulous elements may attempt to undermine our sacred institutions, they do so at their peril,” the statement said.
The council maintained that it has the capacity to address such violations and ensure that similar incidents do not occur in the future.
