Nigerian music star Davido turned a global entertainment event into a platform for advocacy after using his appearance at the FIFA World Cup Countdown Concert to draw attention to the plight of dozens of abducted students and teachers in Oyo State.

The award-winning singer performed at the high-profile event held at the Crypto.com Arena, but it was his message off-stage that captured significant attention.

Davido appeared in a custom-made jacket bearing the names of 39 students and seven teachers who were reportedly abducted by armed attackers in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, on May 15.

The outfit featured green badges carrying the names of individual victims and a prominent message on the back that read: “Bring Them Home.”

Turning a Global Stage Into a Call for Action

With millions of football fans around the world following FIFA-related events ahead of the next World Cup, Davido used the opportunity to shine a spotlight on a tragedy that has continued to worry many Nigerians.

Before taking the stage, the singer spoke emotionally about the situation and expressed concern for affected families.

“May God be with the families of the abducted and the ones that have been killed,” he said.

“It’s a very, very sad situation. We are praying every day and also praying that the government hastens up with their rescue.”

Davido added that the ongoing crisis reflects the broader challenges facing the country.

“My country is going through a lot. It’s sad.”

Celebrities Increasingly Using Their Platforms for Advocacy

Davido’s gesture highlights a growing trend among public figures who use international appearances to raise awareness about social and humanitarian issues.

While celebrities are often associated with entertainment and popular culture, many have increasingly used their visibility to spotlight causes ranging from education and public health to human rights and security concerns.

For Davido, whose influence extends far beyond Nigeria, the message ensured that an audience unfamiliar with the situation in Oyo State was exposed to the ongoing concerns surrounding the victims and their families.

Why the Story Is Resonating

The image of one of Africa’s biggest music stars wearing the names of abducted students on an international stage has generated conversations online.

Many supporters praised the singer for using a major global event to amplify the voices of affected families, while others expressed hope that increased international attention could help sustain public interest in the case.

The gesture also underscores how entertainment figures can sometimes play a role in keeping humanitarian issues in the public spotlight long after headlines begin to fade.

A Message Beyond Music

Although the FIFA World Cup Countdown Concert was designed to celebrate football and entertainment, Davido’s appearance carried a message that extended beyond performance.

For families still awaiting news about their loved ones, the singer’s appeal served as a reminder that the story remains far from over.

As discussions continue online, his call to “Bring Them Home” has become one of the most talked-about moments from the event, demonstrating how a single act of advocacy can resonate far beyond the stage.
