Fear Grips Johannesburg Settlement After Gunmen Kill 12 in Late-Night Attack

Residents of the Jumpers Informal Settlement in Johannesburg are grappling with fear and grief after a deadly late-night shooting left 12 people dead and nine others injured in one of the area’s worst recent attacks.

Police were called to the settlement in Cleveland on Tuesday night after reports of multiple gunshots echoed through the community.

When officers arrived, they found several victims suffering from gunshot wounds.

According to preliminary information released by authorities, eight men and three women died at the scene, while another male victim later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

Nine survivors were transported to various medical facilities for treatment.

Investigators believe the attack was carried out by a large group of armed men who arrived at the settlement in a white Toyota Quantum before opening fire.

Witnesses said the assailants moved through different sections of the community, shooting at residents before fleeing.

No arrests had been announced at the time of reporting.

“We Thought We Were Going to Die”

For residents, the attack has left emotional scars that may last long after the gunfire stopped.

One community member told local media he hid inside a toilet as shots rang out across the settlement.

According to the resident, the gunfire continued for an extended period, leaving many people terrified and uncertain whether they would survive the night.

The witness also expressed concern about what he described as a growing pattern of violence in the area.

Community Living in Fear

The latest tragedy has renewed concerns about security within informal settlements around Johannesburg.

A community leader, who asked not to be identified out of fear for her safety, said many residents are afraid to speak openly.

“This place is very dangerous,” she reportedly said.

“It’s really painful that people were killed like dogs.”

Her comments reflect the anxiety felt by many residents who say violence has become increasingly common in the area.

According to locals, a community leader was shot dead only weeks earlier.

Suspected Criminal Rivalries Under Investigation

While police have not officially confirmed a motive, community sources believe the attack could be linked to ongoing tensions surrounding illegal mining activities.

South Africa has battled recurring violence connected to illegal mining operations, particularly in parts of Gauteng Province, where armed groups have often been linked to territorial disputes.

Authorities have yet to determine whether Tuesday night’s attack was connected to such activities.

A Community Searching for Answers

As families begin mourning loved ones, questions remain about who carried out the attack and why.

For residents of the settlement, the tragedy is not just another crime statistic.

It is a painful reminder of the insecurity many communities continue to face and the uncertainty that follows when violence strikes close to home.

Investigators are expected to continue gathering evidence as authorities work to identify those responsible for the deadly assault.
