Nollywood actress Annie Macaulay has found herself at the centre of another social media debate after her decision to congratulate fashion designer Abiodun Folashade Tokunbo, popularly known as CEO Luminee, triggered criticism from many Nigerians online.

The controversy erupted shortly after CEO Luminee and actor Olanrewaju Omiyinka, better known as Baba Ijesha, announced the birth of their son.

While some social media users celebrated the news and offered congratulations to the couple, others reacted with shock because of Baba Ijesha’s past conviction, a case that remains one of the most controversial stories in the Nigerian entertainment industry in recent years.

As reactions poured in, Annie Macaulay joined others in congratulating CEO Luminee. However, her comment quickly attracted attention for reasons she may not have anticipated.

Many social media users criticised the actress, arguing that public figures should be careful about the messages they send, especially when those messages involve individuals whose past actions remain highly sensitive to many Nigerians.

The criticism intensified as some commenters pointed out that Annie herself is a mother of two daughters, questioning why she would publicly celebrate the announcement without considering the controversy surrounding Baba Ijesha.

Why Nigerians Reacted So Strongly

The strong reaction stems largely from Baba Ijesha’s criminal case, which generated widespread outrage across the country.

The actor was convicted in connection with a sexual offence involving a minor, a case that dominated headlines and sparked intense conversations about child protection, accountability, and justice within the entertainment industry.

Although he has completed his sentence and regained his freedom, public opinion remains deeply divided.

Some Nigerians believe that individuals who have served their sentences deserve an opportunity to rebuild their lives.

Others argue that certain offences leave lasting concerns that cannot simply disappear with time.

Because of these differing views, any public support, endorsement, or congratulatory message connected to Baba Ijesha often attracts scrutiny.

Annie Explains Her Position

Following the backlash, Annie Macaulay took to social media to explain that her congratulatory message was not intended as a statement about Baba Ijesha.

According to the actress, she had no idea about the wider conversation unfolding online at the time she left her comment.

She explained that her relationship with CEO Luminee was professional and that the designer had previously made an outfit for her.

As a result, she simply responded to what she believed was positive news without investigating the discussions surrounding it.

In her response, Annie suggested that many of those criticising her misunderstood the context of her comment.

Rather than endorsing anyone’s past actions, she indicated that she was merely acknowledging someone she knew personally and professionally.

The Debate Over Public Figures and Responsibility

The incident has also sparked a broader debate about the expectations placed on celebrities in the social media age.

Some people argue that public figures should carefully consider the implications of every public comment because their words carry influence.

Others believe it is unreasonable to expect celebrities to research every situation before offering congratulations or support to people within their personal networks.

For supporters of Annie, the backlash represents an example of social media users rushing to conclusions without considering intent.

For critics, the issue is less about Annie’s intentions and more about the symbolism of public support in a highly sensitive situation.

CEO Luminee Also Faces Public Scrutiny

The controversy has not been limited to Annie Macaulay.

CEO Luminee herself has faced intense public scrutiny since announcing her relationship with Baba Ijesha and the birth of their child.

Some social media users have questioned her decision to marry the actor despite his criminal history.

Others have defended her right to make personal choices regarding her relationships and family life.

The announcement has therefore reopened discussions about forgiveness, rehabilitation, second chances, and whether society should permanently define people by their past actions.

Social Media Remains Divided

As the debate continues, opinions remain sharply divided.

Some Nigerians believe Annie Macaulay did nothing wrong and became the target of unnecessary outrage.

Others insist that celebrities must be more conscious of how their public actions may be interpreted, especially when sensitive issues are involved.

For now, Annie’s explanation appears unlikely to end the conversation completely.

If anything, it has shifted the discussion from her original congratulatory message to a larger question about accountability, public perception, and the responsibilities that come with celebrity influence in the digital age.
