Health officials preparing Ebola response measures after NCDC placed several Nigerian states on high-risk alert.

Ebola Alert: NCDC Places Lagos, Abuja And 8 Other States On High-Risk Watch List

Posted on May 29, 2026

Nigerian health authorities are stepping up preparations against a possible Ebola outbreak after identifying 10 states and the Federal Capital Territory as areas requiring heightened surveillance and emergency readiness.

The warning comes from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, which says Nigeria currently faces a high risk of importing the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus due to ongoing outbreaks in parts of Africa.

For now, there are no confirmed Ebola cases in Nigeria.

But health officials appear unwilling to take chances.

Behind the alert is a worrying situation unfolding in parts of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where health authorities have recorded more than 1,000 suspected cases and hundreds of deaths linked to the outbreak.

That has prompted the World Health Organization to classify the situation as a major international public health concern.

According to the NCDC, Nigeria’s extensive international travel connections, busy airports, seaports and porous land borders increase the possibility of the virus crossing into the country.

As a result, health authorities have singled out the following states for enhanced preparedness measures:

  • Lagos
  • Federal Capital Territory (Abuja)
  • Rivers
  • Kano
  • Enugu
  • Borno
  • Akwa Ibom
  • Cross River
  • Taraba
  • Adamawa

These locations were selected because of their international transit routes, border activities and high population movement.

Health facilities in these states have now been advised to strengthen isolation centres, improve surveillance systems and ensure rapid response teams are ready if a suspected case emerges.

One of the biggest concerns surrounding the current outbreak is that the Bundibugyo Ebola strain does not have an approved vaccine.

Health experts say vaccines currently used against the Zaire strain of Ebola have not been proven effective against the strain responsible for the ongoing outbreak.

That means prevention, early detection and rapid isolation remain the most important tools available.

The NCDC also reminded Nigerians that Ebola is not spread through the air.

Instead, infection occurs through direct contact with:

  • blood,
  • bodily fluids,
  • contaminated surfaces,
  • or infected animals.

Officials are particularly concerned because the early symptoms often resemble common illnesses many Nigerians are already familiar with.

Initial signs may include:

  • fever,
  • severe tiredness,
  • muscle pain,
  • headaches,
  • vomiting,
  • diarrhoea,
  • stomach pain,
  • and persistent hiccups.

Because those symptoms can easily be mistaken for malaria, typhoid or Lassa fever, health workers have been instructed to immediately investigate suspicious cases and obtain travel histories where necessary.

The NCDC has also activated its National Emergency Operations Centre and directed states to assess the readiness of hospitals, laboratories, ambulance systems and contact-tracing teams.

While there is no immediate cause for panic, health authorities say preparedness now could make the difference if the virus eventually reaches Nigeria.
