Tinubu Reacts as Retired General Dies in Kidnappers' Den, Vows No Negotiation With Terrorists

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed shock and sadness over the death of retired Major-General Rabe Abubakar, who reportedly died while being held captive by terrorists in Katsina State.

The former military officer and his wife were abducted by armed bandits on May 30 while travelling to their hometown.

The Katsina State Government confirmed on Saturday that the retired general died while in captivity after reportedly suffering complications related to diabetes and hypertension.

His wife remains in the custody of the kidnappers.

Reacting to the development, President Tinubu extended his condolences to the family of the deceased, the Katsina State Government, and the Nigerian Armed Forces.

The President also sympathised with the retired general’s wife, who is still being held by her captors.

Tinubu Rejects Negotiations With Terrorists

In a statement issued by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu reiterated his administration’s position against negotiating with terrorists and kidnappers.

According to the President, criminal groups should not expect the government to release detained terrorists or bow to any demands in exchange for hostages.

“As I said on June 12, bandits, kidnappers and sponsors of terror should now surrender or face the full force of the Nigerian State,” the statement read.

“These windows of surrender will not remain open forever. And no mercy will be shown to those who trade in the blood of Nigerians.”

‘We Will Triumph Over Terror’

The President called on Nigerians to remain united and confident in the country’s ongoing fight against insecurity.

He maintained that the government remains committed to defeating terrorism, banditry and kidnapping across the country.

“As Nigerians, we must stand united and be assured that the enemies of our nation shall soon be history. We will triumph over terror and continue to build a more prosperous nation,” Tinubu said.

Death Should Be a Turning Point

Tinubu described the late General Abubakar’s death as a painful reminder of the dangers posed by terrorists and insurgents.

He said the incident should strengthen Nigeria’s resolve to confront criminal groups without compromise.

“General Abubakar’s death should further serve as a defining moment in our battle against terrorists and insurgents, never to negotiate with them on any terms, but to continue to treat them as the greatest enemies of our dear nation, who should never be spared,” the President added.

Growing Security Concerns

The incident comes amid continued concerns over insecurity in several parts of northern Nigeria, where kidnapping for ransom, banditry and terrorist attacks remain major challenges.

Security agencies have intensified operations against criminal groups across the country, but attacks on communities, travellers and public officials continue to raise concerns among citizens.

The death of the retired military officer has further renewed calls for stronger security measures and the swift rescue of all persons currently being held captive by armed groups.
