Even though Nigeria’s next presidential election is still some time away, the political battle for 2027 appears to have already started.
Across the country, conversations are growing louder about potential candidates, political alliances, coalition talks, and whether President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will seek re-election.
At the same time, familiar opposition names such as Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi continue to dominate political discussions online and offline.
For many Nigerians, however, the biggest concern is not who becomes president.
The biggest concern is survival.
Food prices remain high.
Transportation costs continue rising.
The cost of living has become unbearable for millions of Nigerians.
And this is exactly why many citizens are becoming vulnerable to political manipulation.
Politics Has Always Been Dirty
Politics has never been a clean game.
From propaganda to vote buying, political intimidation, false promises, and ethnic manipulation, Nigerians have seen many ugly sides of elections over the years.
Election periods often come with:
- Empty promises
- Temporary handouts
- Tribal politics
- Religious manipulation
- Youth exploitation
And unfortunately, many politicians understand how desperate people have become.
The Reality of Vote Buying
One of Nigeria’s biggest election problems remains vote buying.
This often happens in different ways:
- Cash gifts
- Food packages
- Transportation money
- Party souvenirs
- Temporary empowerment schemes
For many struggling families, ₦5,000 or ₦10,000 can feel significant in the moment.
But the bigger question remains:
What happens after election day?
That money disappears quickly.
But poor leadership can affect citizens for four years or even longer.
Nigerians Are Tired
There is growing frustration across the country.
Young people are leaving Nigeria.
Businesses are struggling.
Families are cutting expenses.
The average Nigerian is simply trying to survive.
This frustration may become a major factor in 2027.
Tinubu’s Position
Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains a major force.
His supporters argue that economic reforms take time and that long-term gains will eventually emerge.
Critics argue that the current hardship has become unbearable for ordinary citizens.
Atiku’s Chances
Atiku Abubakar remains a major political figure.
Many believe he may still attempt another presidential run.
But questions remain about whether Nigerians want another familiar face.
Peter Obi’s Influence
Peter Obi continues to maintain strong youth support.
The Obidient movement remains one of Nigeria’s strongest modern political movements.
However, questions remain around broader coalition-building.
My Honest Opinion
Politics is a very dirty game.
It has always been dirty.
But what worries me most is how suffering Nigerians continue to be used during election seasons.
People are hungry.
Many families cannot afford basic necessities.
And politicians understand this weakness.
That is why citizens must stop selling their future for temporary relief.
₦5,000 cannot fix four years of bad governance.
₦10,000 cannot solve unemployment.
Rice packages cannot build hospitals.
Election gifts disappear quickly.
The consequences of bad leadership stay much longer.
People need to vote based on competence, accountability, track record and real policies.
Not stomach infrastructure.
The Bigger Question
Who truly understands what Nigerians are going through?
Who has realistic solutions?
Who can build trust?
Those are the real questions voters should ask.
Final Thoughts
The battle for 2027 may have already started.
But the biggest decision will not be made by politicians.
It will be made by voters.
And this time, Nigerians must think beyond temporary survival and focus on long-term national progress.
Because the future of millions of people will depend on that decision.
