The Ooni of Ife speaking during a palace gathering in Ile-Ife while reflecting on public pressure over having children.

“People Mocked Me” — Ooni Of Ife Speaks On Public Pressure Over Delay In Having Children After Becoming Monarch

Posted on May 17, 2026

The palace atmosphere in Ile-Ife turned emotional over the weekend after Adeyeye Ogunwusi openly reflected on one of the most difficult personal experiences he faced after ascending the throne.

While receiving visitors who came to celebrate the birth of twin princes delivered by Queen Mariam, the monarch revealed that he endured years of pressure, criticism and public mockery over delays in having children after becoming the Ooni.

According to a statement issued by the palace’s Director of Media and Public Affairs, Moses Olafare, the traditional ruler said many people did not understand the emotional burden he carried privately during that period.

“I thank God today. There is nothing God cannot do,” the monarch reportedly said while expressing gratitude over the birth of the twins.

But beyond the celebration itself, the conversation quickly became a reflection on the realities and expectations attached to royalty.

“I Never Planned To Marry Many Wives”

The Ooni also admitted that his marital journey unfolded differently from what he originally imagined while growing up.

According to him, he never expected that his life would eventually involve multiple marriages.

However, he explained that the responsibilities, expectations and traditional structure surrounding the throne of Oduduwa significantly changed the direction of his personal life after becoming king.

The monarch described his experience since ascending the throne as a journey filled with “mysteries” and unexpected challenges.

He also recalled how intense pressure mounted shortly after his coronation, especially regarding expectations around family, marriage and producing heirs.

The Early Struggles He Rarely Spoke About

In another deeply personal revelation, the Ooni disclosed that he first became a father at the age of 19.

He described that period as overwhelming and emotionally difficult, noting that the responsibility came very early in life.

According to him, his mother became one of the strongest sources of encouragement during those years, constantly pushing him to remain focused and hardworking despite the pressure surrounding him.

The monarch further revealed that at one point, several respected traditional rulers and influential figures tried persuading one of his former wives to relocate permanently to Ile-Ife after he became king, but those efforts eventually failed.

Royal Celebration Turns Into Moment Of Reflection

The latest comments from the monarch came during celebrations surrounding the arrival of the twin princes — a development many visitors at the palace described as emotional considering the years of public conversations surrounding the royal household.

The Ooni also used the opportunity to appreciate Oluremi Tinubu, whom he described as a strong mother figure that supported and encouraged him during difficult moments.

He thanked guests, well-wishers and supporters for standing by the royal family through different phases of his reign.

According to the palace statement, Queen Mariam also extended greetings and appreciation to those who visited and celebrated with the family.

Beyond Royalty, A Human Story

For many Nigerians online, the monarch’s comments opened wider conversations around societal expectations, marriage pressure and public scrutiny faced by people in influential positions.

While royal life often appears glamorous from the outside, the Ooni’s remarks offered a rare glimpse into the emotional and personal struggles that sometimes exist behind palace walls.
