Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has ordered a sweeping overhaul of Bayelsa United Football Club following the team’s relegation from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), dissolving the club’s board and dismissing all players and members of the technical crew.
The decision comes after Bayelsa United endured a disappointing 2026 campaign that saw the Yenagoa-based side finish in the relegation zone and drop into the Nigerian National League (NNL).
The governor directed that the dissolution take immediate effect as the state government begins plans to rebuild the club ahead of next season.
Relegation Triggers Major Shake-Up
Bayelsa United ended the 2026 NPFL season second from bottom after collecting just 43 points from 38 matches.
The club recorded 11 wins, 10 draws and 17 defeats during a difficult campaign that ultimately ended in relegation.
Despite receiving financial backing from the state government throughout the season, the team was unable to avoid the drop.
The outcome has now resulted in one of the most far-reaching restructuring exercises seen in Nigerian club football in recent years.
Fresh Start Planned for Bayelsa United
Governor Diri has directed that a new management structure be put in place as part of efforts to return the club to the top division.
Officials are expected to appoint a new board and technical leadership team in the coming days.
The objective, according to government sources, is to create a more competitive team capable of securing promotion back to the NPFL at the earliest opportunity.
Club’s Roller-Coaster History Continues
Founded in 2008, Bayelsa United has experienced a turbulent journey through Nigerian football.
The club has now suffered three relegations from the country’s top-flight division while also achieving promotion on two occasions.
The latest setback adds another chapter to a history marked by periods of success followed by struggles for consistency.
For supporters, the latest relegation represents another difficult moment, particularly given expectations that the club would remain competitive after receiving significant support during the season.
Fans React to Tough Decision
The governor’s decision has already generated debate among football fans and sports observers.
While some supporters believe drastic measures were necessary following the disappointing campaign, others have questioned whether dismissing the entire squad and technical crew is the best route to rebuilding the club.
The move nevertheless signals the state government’s determination to avoid a prolonged stay in the second tier of Nigerian football.
Pressure to Deliver Immediate Promotion
With a new management team expected to emerge soon, attention will now shift to how Bayelsa United plans to rebuild.
The challenge will be assembling a competitive squad capable of earning promotion while restoring confidence among supporters.
For many fans, success next season will be judged by one outcome: returning Bayelsa United to the Nigeria Premier Football League.
