Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has stirred political debate after declaring that there is “no vacancy in Aso Rock,” while accusing opposition forces of exploiting insecurity to undermine President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The governor made the remarks on Tuesday during the flag-off of the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign for the upcoming local government elections in Edo South Senatorial District.
Speaking before party supporters and candidates, Okpebholo argued that recent security challenges across parts of the country were being politically manipulated to create a negative perception of the current administration.
According to him, those behind such actions would not achieve their political ambitions through insecurity.
“There is no vacancy in Aso Rock,” the governor said.
“They can even kidnap all of us, but there is no vacancy in Aso Rock.”
The statement quickly drew attention due to its timing, coming as political conversations surrounding the 2027 presidential election continue to gather momentum.
Governor Links Insecurity to Political Interests
During his address, Okpebholo alleged that some opposition figures were attempting to capitalize on security concerns to weaken public confidence in the ruling party.
He argued that creating instability would ultimately hurt ordinary Nigerians rather than advance any political agenda.
“What is happening today is the handiwork of the opposition,” he said.
“They have failed. Is it by kidnapping children? Then who are you going to govern? There will be nobody for you to govern.”
The governor called for peace and stability, insisting that governments at all levels require a secure environment to deliver development projects and governance effectively.
Tinubu’s Reforms Defended
Okpebholo also used the occasion to defend President Tinubu’s economic reforms, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy, a policy that has generated both support and criticism since its implementation.
According to the governor, the impact of the policy can already be seen in infrastructure and development projects across Edo State.
He maintained that despite economic difficulties experienced by many Nigerians, the administration’s reforms were laying the groundwork for long-term national development.
APC Looks Ahead to 2027
Beyond the local government elections, the event highlighted the APC’s growing focus on future electoral contests.
The governor expressed confidence that strong performances in upcoming elections would strengthen the party’s position ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He suggested that the party’s grassroots mobilisation efforts could contribute significantly to support for President Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Why This Statement Matters
Political observers view comments such as “there is no vacancy in Aso Rock” as early indicators of how political parties are beginning to position themselves ahead of the next presidential election cycle.
Although the 2027 election remains some time away, statements from influential political figures often provide insight into campaign narratives likely to dominate future political debates.
The remarks also reflect how issues such as insecurity, economic reforms, governance, and political competition are increasingly becoming interconnected within Nigeria’s political landscape.
What Happens Next?
Attention will now shift to the Edo State local government elections and how the APC performs at the grassroots level.
At the national level, discussions around security, economic reforms, and the political future of President Tinubu are expected to remain central themes as parties gradually prepare for the next electoral cycle.
Whether Okpebholo’s comments resonate with voters remains to be seen, but the statement has already added another layer to Nigeria’s evolving political conversation.
