Actress Toyin Adewale, mother of popular singer Mayorkun, has opened up about the life-changing moment her son first connected with Afrobeats superstar Davido, revealing details of how a simple song cover eventually launched one of Nigeria’s most successful music careers.
Speaking during an interview with actress Biola Adebayo, Toyin recalled that Mayorkun had recorded a cover version of one of Davido’s songs while visiting a cousin’s house and shared it online without knowing it would attract the singer’s attention.
According to her, Davido later reached out to Mayorkun through a direct message, although the family initially believed the account could have been fake.
“We didn’t know if it was really Davido or someone pretending to be him,” she explained.
However, their doubts disappeared after the award-winning singer personally called Mayorkun, sent him a box of clothes, and gifted him a significant amount of money.
The relationship quickly developed, and when Mayorkun eventually met Davido in person, the singer recorded his breakthrough hit Eleko that same night.
Toyin revealed that Davido was so impressed by her son’s talent that he immediately invited him to come and live with him, a decision that would eventually transform Mayorkun into one of Nigeria’s biggest music stars.
