Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has strongly condemned the reported abduction of several persons at the popular Vegetable Market along Airport Road in Benin City, describing the incident as unacceptable and a direct threat to public safety.
The governor’s reaction comes amid growing concerns over insecurity and kidnapping across parts of Nigeria, with residents increasingly demanding stronger action from authorities to protect lives and property.
In a statement issued on Monday by his Chief Press Secretary, Patrick Ebojele, Okpebholo directed the Edo State Commissioner of Police to immediately commence a full-scale investigation into the incident and intensify efforts aimed at rescuing the victims.
According to the governor, criminal activities such as kidnapping have no place in Edo State and must be confronted decisively.
“I strongly condemn this act of kidnapping and I call on the Commissioner of Police to immediately open investigation into the matter,” Okpebholo said.
“As a government, we will not tolerate any act that threatens public safety and security or disturbs the peace of the state.”
Government Vows Tough Response
The governor assured residents that his administration remains committed to tackling criminality and ensuring that those responsible for the abduction are identified, arrested and prosecuted.
He stressed that security agencies have been directed to leave no stone unturned in their efforts to secure the release of the victims and restore confidence among residents.
Okpebholo noted that maintaining peace and security remains one of the key responsibilities of government and pledged continued support for law enforcement agencies operating within the state.
The governor’s directive comes at a time when several state governments across the country are strengthening security measures in response to increasing incidents of kidnapping, banditry and violent crimes.
Residents Urged to Remain Vigilant
While assuring residents of government intervention, Okpebholo also appealed to members of the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that could assist ongoing investigations.
According to him, community participation plays a vital role in crime prevention and early detection of suspicious activities.
He urged residents of Benin City and other parts of Edo State to promptly report unusual movements, suspicious gatherings and security concerns to the nearest police station.
Security experts have repeatedly emphasized that intelligence gathered from local communities often plays a critical role in preventing attacks and helping security agencies track criminal networks.
Kidnapping Remains National Concern
Kidnapping for ransom has continued to pose serious security challenges across several parts of Nigeria despite ongoing military and police operations.
Over the past few years, criminal groups have increasingly targeted travellers, residents, students, traditional rulers and business owners, often demanding huge sums of money for their release.
The growing trend has sparked nationwide debate about the effectiveness of current security measures and renewed calls for reforms, including the establishment of state police and greater collaboration between security agencies and local communities.
Several stakeholders have argued that addressing insecurity requires not only law enforcement action but also improved intelligence gathering, community engagement and economic opportunities for young people.
Renewed Focus on Security
Since assuming office, Governor Okpebholo has repeatedly stated that security remains one of the priorities of his administration.
The governor has pledged to work closely with security agencies and community leaders to strengthen safety across the state and create an environment where businesses and residents can thrive without fear.
Monday’s condemnation of the Benin market abduction adds to growing pressure on security agencies to secure the release of the victims and bring those responsible to justice.
For many residents, the incident serves as another reminder of the urgent need for sustained efforts to combat kidnapping and other violent crimes across the country.
As investigations continue, authorities have assured the public that every available resource will be deployed to rescue the victims and ensure that the perpetrators face the full weight of the law.
