Media personality Daddy Freeze has revealed that he walked out of the service of songs held in honour of late Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo, accusing gospel singer Mercy Chinwo of turning the solemn occasion into what he described as a concert.
Speaking in a video that has since gone viral online, Daddy Freeze expressed disappointment with the style of music performed during the memorial event, arguing that the atmosphere did not reflect the reflective nature of a service of songs.
According to him, such gatherings should be centred around comforting worship songs and hymns rather than energetic performances.
Daddy Freeze said he found it difficult to remain at the event because the mood created by some of the performances was more suited to a concert than a memorial service.
He particularly referenced Mercy Chinwo’s appearance, claiming that the gospel singer’s performance changed the tone of the ceremony.
The media personality also questioned the growing trend of inviting multiple gospel artists to lead worship sessions during funeral events and memorial services.
According to him, traditional hymns are often more appropriate because they help create a calm, respectful and reflective atmosphere for grieving families and friends.
His comments have since sparked debate online, with some social media users agreeing that funeral services should remain solemn, while others defended Mercy Chinwo and argued that praise and worship can also be a way of celebrating the life of a deceased person.
The remarks have generated mixed reactions across social media platforms, with supporters and critics weighing in on what they believe is the proper balance between celebration and mourning during memorial events.
Neither Mercy Chinwo nor representatives of the late actor’s family had publicly responded to Daddy Freeze’s comments at the time of filing this report.
