Canadian rapper Drake is celebrating another major sports betting victory after winning $1 million from a high-stakes wager on Canada’s FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash against South Africa.
The Grammy-winning rapper placed $770,000 on Canada to secure victory, with the bet carrying a potential payout of just over $1 million. After Canada edged South Africa 1-0, the wager paid off, earning Drake a profit of approximately $231,000.

Before the match, Drake hinted that the bet was inspired by friendly banter with internationally acclaimed South African DJ Black Coffee.
“@realblackcoffee was chirping in the DM. I had to raise the STAKES,” Drake wrote while sharing a screenshot of his bet.
While many fans celebrated the win, the latest payout has also revived conversations about Drake’s long and unpredictable history with sports betting.
A Win That Follows Several High-Profile Losses
Although Drake has become known for placing enormous bets on sporting events, not every gamble has ended in celebration.
Over the years, the rapper has publicly wagered millions of dollars on basketball, boxing, mixed martial arts and football.
Some of his most talked-about losses include bets involving heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua, whose defeats left Drake on the losing side of expensive wagers.
He has also suffered losses in UFC title fights and NBA games, leading many sports fans to jokingly refer to the so-called “Drake Curse“—an internet theory suggesting athletes or teams associated with Drake often experience unexpected defeats.
Whether coincidence or superstition, the phrase has become part of popular sports culture whenever Drake publicly supports a team or places a significant bet.
Why Drake Continues to Bet Big
Unlike the average sports bettor, Drake’s gambling activity is closely tied to his public image and commercial partnerships.
Many of his wagers are shared on social media, attracting millions of views and generating conversation before major sporting events.
The publicity surrounding these bets often extends far beyond the result itself, making each wager part of a broader entertainment narrative.
Even when he loses, the discussion surrounding the bet frequently dominates online conversations.
What Ordinary Bettors Can Learn
Drake’s latest win may appear glamorous, but it also highlights an important reality about sports betting.
For every headline-making victory, there have been several costly defeats.
Professional gamblers and financial experts consistently warn that betting outcomes are unpredictable, regardless of how confident a prediction may seem.
Large wins often receive widespread attention, while repeated losses receive far less publicity, creating the impression that gambling is more profitable than it actually is.
Sports betting should therefore be viewed as entertainment rather than a reliable source of income.
Canada’s Victory Sends Drake Home Smiling
This time, however, fortune favoured the Canadian superstar.
Canada’s narrow victory over South Africa not only secured progression in the FIFA World Cup but also delivered one of Drake’s most notable betting successes in recent months.
Whether this marks the end of the so-called Drake Curse or simply another chapter in his unpredictable gambling history remains open to debate.
For now, the rapper has every reason to celebrate—but his betting journey also serves as a reminder that today’s million-dollar win does not guarantee tomorrow’s success.
