A convicted offender who was accidentally released from a UK prison before the conclusion of his criminal case has fled to Bosnia, prompting fresh scrutiny of administrative procedures within the British justice system.
Bernadin Dedic, 48, was convicted this week on multiple serious charges after a jury at Isleworth Crown Court found him guilty in his absence.
The businessman had originally been remanded in custody while awaiting trial. However, in February, he was mistakenly released from HMP Wormwood Scrubs after prison authorities received incorrect information indicating that he had been granted bail.
Within hours of his release, Dedic left the United Kingdom and travelled to Bosnia using a Bosnian passport.
Administrative Error Triggers Investigation
Court officials later discovered that a digital case mix-up had resulted in incorrect bail information being sent to the prison.
The error allowed Dedic to be released despite remaining subject to custody orders.
The mistake has since prompted an internal investigation by the UK justice system.
Judge Martin Edmunds KC described the incident as an extremely rare occurrence and said authorities were treating the matter seriously.
He noted that officials would examine how the error happened and identify measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Trial Continued Without Defendant
Although Dedic initially indicated a willingness to return to Britain, he failed to appear for multiple court proceedings.
Court hearings were told that he offered various explanations for his absence, including medical issues and travel difficulties.
Judges granted additional time to allow him to return for trial, but he remained outside the United Kingdom.
Eventually, the court ruled that proceedings would continue in his absence.
Following the trial, jurors returned guilty verdicts on all charges brought against him.
Extradition Proceedings Could Follow
With the trial concluded, attention is now turning to sentencing.
Legal experts say British authorities may seek extradition if Dedic refuses to return voluntarily to face sentencing.
Extradition is a legal process through which one country requests the return of an individual from another jurisdiction to face criminal proceedings or serve a sentence.
Officials have not yet announced whether a formal extradition request has been initiated.
Questions Raised About Court Procedures
The case has generated discussion about the safeguards used to manage custody records and court communications.
While justice officials stressed that such mistakes are uncommon, the incident has highlighted how administrative errors can have significant consequences when dealing with serious criminal cases.
A spokesperson for HM Courts and Tribunals Service acknowledged the seriousness of the incident and confirmed that an investigation had been launched.
The agency said lessons would be learned from the error to reduce the risk of similar incidents occurring in the future.
For now, authorities remain focused on ensuring that the convicted offender returns to the United Kingdom to face sentencing and complete the legal process.
