President Donald Trump recently proposed changing the name Artificial Intelligence to Superintelligence. His reason is that the word “artificial” makes this powerful technology sound fake. On this particular point, I understand and largely agree with him.
What we are witnessing today no longer feels artificial. This technology can generate ideas, analyse information, create designs and complete in minutes what would ordinarily take people several hours or even days.
In my own creative work, AI has been incredibly helpful. I now produce many of my graphics using AI. To be completely honest, it has reduced the amount of work I give to my graphics designer. That personal experience also shows us the other side of this technological revolution.
While AI creates opportunities, improves productivity and makes creativity more accessible, it may also cause many people to lose their jobs. We must therefore embrace innovation without ignoring its effect on workers. People should be given opportunities to retrain, develop new skills and learn how to work with these powerful tools.
Technically, the AI we use today may not yet be what experts describe as true superintelligence, which would mean a system capable of surpassing human intelligence in almost every field. However, considering its extraordinary abilities and future potential, I understand why President Trump believes it deserves a more powerful name.
Change is constant, and this new form of intelligence has come to stay. We may not know exactly what the future holds, but we must ensure that it is developed responsibly, governed wisely and used to support humanity rather than harm or completely replace us.
Therefore, on the proposed change from AI to SI, I agree with President Donald Trump. However, embracing superintelligence must also mean embracing super responsibility.
