A Nigerian man has been charged with the murder of a fellow Nigerian following an incident in Lewisham, South London, according to the Metropolitan Police.
The suspect, Maxwell Oguanaya, 32, has been charged in connection with the death of Taiwo Ekerin, 41, after an alleged altercation that occurred in May.
In a statement released on June 5, 2026, the Metropolitan Police said officers were called to Lewisham High Street at approximately 4:40 a.m. on Sunday, May 24, following reports of a disturbance.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a man suffering from a serious head injury.
Emergency responders from the London Ambulance Service treated the victim at the scene before he was transported to hospital for further medical care.
Despite efforts to save him, Ekerin later died from his injuries and was pronounced dead on May 30.
Following investigations, Oguanaya, who resides on Eastfield Road, Enfield, was arrested on suspicion of murder on June 4.
Police subsequently charged him with murder on June 5, and he appeared before Ealing Magistrates’ Court later that day.
The court remanded him in custody pending further proceedings. He is scheduled to appear again on June 9.
Meanwhile, detectives have also arrested a second suspect, a 34-year-old man, on suspicion of murder.
The individual remains in police custody as investigations continue.
Authorities have not yet disclosed details regarding the circumstances that led to the altercation or the relationship between the two men.
The Metropolitan Police said inquiries into the incident remain ongoing.
