APC chieftain Joe Igbokwe reacts to Omoyele Sowore's remand in Kuje prison over comments linked to President Bola Tinubu.

Joe Igbokwe Backs Sowore’s Remand, Says Criticising Tinubu Is ‘Not A Career’

A fresh political debate has erupted following the remand of activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore at the Kuje Correctional Centre, with prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain Joe Igbokwe publicly supporting the court’s decision.

Sowore was remanded by an Abuja High Court on Monday, June 22, in connection with an ongoing legal matter linked to remarks he allegedly made on social media about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The development has generated widespread reactions across Nigeria’s political landscape, with supporters and critics offering differing views on the implications of the court’s decision.

Among those who reacted strongly was Joe Igbokwe, a well-known APC figure, who argued that repeated attacks on President Tinubu should not be viewed as a profession or political strategy.

Reacting to reports of Sowore’s remand, Igbokwe stated that Nigeria remains a country governed by laws and that individuals must be accountable for their actions.

“Nigeria is not a lawless country. Sowore has taken the law into his hands for years now. Protests on the streets, disturbing public peace, abusing law enforcement officers, encouraging killers in the South East, abusing PBAT, these are not a career,” he said.

The APC chieftain’s comments immediately sparked discussions online, with many Nigerians weighing in on the broader issues surrounding freedom of expression, political criticism and the rule of law.

Supporters of Sowore have maintained that public criticism of elected officials is a fundamental democratic right and should not attract punitive measures. They argue that activism and political engagement are essential components of democratic governance and accountability.

Others, however, insist that freedom of expression does not exempt citizens from complying with court orders or legal processes, stressing that all individuals must be subject to the same judicial standards regardless of political affiliation.

Sowore, publisher of Sahara Reporters and a former presidential candidate under the African Action Congress (AAC), has remained one of Nigeria’s most outspoken government critics over the years.

His activism has frequently placed him at the centre of political controversies, protests and legal battles involving successive administrations. Through campaigns focused on governance, accountability and social justice, Sowore has built a reputation as one of the country’s most recognizable political activists.

The latest court development adds another chapter to his long-running confrontations with authorities and is expected to remain a major topic of public discussion in the coming days.

Political analysts note that the case has evolved beyond the immediate legal proceedings, becoming part of a wider national conversation about the boundaries of political speech, the responsibilities of public figures and the role of the judiciary in resolving politically sensitive disputes.

The remand has also reignited debate among supporters and opponents of President Tinubu, with both sides interpreting the development through sharply different political lenses.

As reactions continue to pour in, attention is expected to shift to the next stage of the court proceedings, where further decisions could shape the direction of the case and influence public perception of the issues involved.

For now, Sowore remains at the centre of a legal and political controversy that continues to generate significant interest across Nigeria’s political space.
