President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to former Lagos State Governor and former Minister of Works, Power and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), as he marks his 63rd birthday, describing him as an outstanding administrator, loyal public servant and one of Nigeria’s most accomplished political leaders.
In a birthday message released on Sunday through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President praised Fashola’s decades of service, highlighting his contributions to governance in Lagos State and at the federal level.
Rather than simply celebrating another birthday, Tinubu’s message reflected on the former minister’s enduring influence on public administration and infrastructure development in Nigeria.
Tinubu Commends Fashola’s Legacy
According to the President, Fashola’s leadership has remained a reference point for progressive governance, particularly for the reforms implemented during his tenure as Governor of Lagos State between 2007 and 2015.
Tinubu noted that after serving as his Chief of Staff from 2003 to 2006, Fashola assumed office as governor and continued several reforms aimed at improving transportation, security, education, healthcare, environmental management and public service delivery.
“Fashola’s commitment to excellence, which helped to transform Lagos into a model of innovation and sustainable urban development, will continue to signpost him as an outstanding governor and leader,” Tinubu said.
The President also acknowledged Fashola’s years in the Federal Executive Council, where he headed strategic ministries responsible for some of Nigeria’s largest infrastructure projects.
From Legal Practice to Public Service
Before entering politics, Babatunde Fashola built a successful legal career and later became one of the prominent figures within Nigeria’s progressive political movement.
His appointment as Chief of Staff to then-Governor Bola Tinubu marked the beginning of a public service career that would eventually see him become Governor of Lagos State before joining the Federal Government as Minister of Works, Power and Housing.
Throughout those years, he became known for his emphasis on policy implementation, institutional reforms and urban planning.
Projects That Defined His Public Career
During his time in public office, Fashola supervised or championed numerous projects and policy initiatives, particularly in infrastructure development.
His administration in Lagos focused on expanding road networks, improving traffic management, strengthening environmental sanitation, modernising public institutions and enhancing security coordination.
At the federal level, he oversaw major road rehabilitation projects, housing initiatives and electricity sector interventions while serving in the ministries of Works, Power and Housing between 2015 and 2023.

Birthday Wishes From Tinubu
As Fashola celebrated his 63rd birthday, President Tinubu prayed for his continued health, wisdom and service to the nation.
“As former governor Fashola celebrates another year, I wish him well. I pray that Almighty Allah will grant him many more years in good health, wisdom, strength and fulfilment as he continues to contribute to the growth, unity and prosperity of our nation.”
The birthday tribute has since attracted congratulatory messages from political associates, supporters and members of the public, many of whom reflected on Fashola’s role in shaping governance in Lagos State and contributing to national development.
