The race for the 2027 presidential election gathered momentum on Saturday as Peter Obi formally accepted his emergence as the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress and announced Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate.
But it wasn’t the announcement itself that immediately grabbed attention.
It was Obi’s promise about how he intends to govern if elected.
In remarks shared after his affirmation, Obi said the office of the Vice President under his administration would not be reduced to a ceremonial position.
Instead, he pledged that Kwankwaso would play a meaningful and active role in government.
“Kwankwaso will be my partner, not a spare tyre,” Obi declared.
The comment quickly became one of the most discussed moments from the event, with supporters interpreting it as a signal that he intends to run a more collaborative administration.
Obi also used the occasion to outline key principles he says would guide his government.
According to him, the rule of law would be treated as non-negotiable, with public officials and ordinary citizens expected to operate within constitutional boundaries.
He argued that Nigeria’s institutions can only function effectively when laws are applied fairly and consistently.
The former Anambra governor further promised to strengthen democratic culture by creating an environment where opposition parties are respected rather than treated as enemies of government.
“Our democracy will exemplify true governance of the people, by the people, and for the people,” Obi stated.
He added that transparency, accountability and fairness would remain central pillars of his administration if elected.
The announcement of Kwankwaso as running mate is expected to generate significant political conversations given the former Kano governor’s influence in Northern Nigeria and his large support base across several states.
Political observers say the partnership could reshape calculations ahead of the 2027 election as parties continue building alliances and consolidating support across different regions of the country.
For now, however, Obi appears focused on projecting a message of inclusion, partnership and institutional reform as his campaign begins taking shape.
