No One Has VDM’s Level of Influence in This Generation — Deji Adeyanju

Lawyer and human rights activist Deji Adeyanju has declared that no public figure in the current generation commands the kind of influence held by social critic Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM).

Adeyanju made the statement on Monday, June 16, shortly after VDM led a protest in Ibadan, Oyo State, demanding urgent action over the abduction of students and teachers in parts of the state.

The lawyer’s comments quickly generated reactions online, with supporters of VDM agreeing with the assessment while critics questioned whether any single social media personality should be considered that influential.

Taking to social media, Adeyanju praised the activist’s ability to mobilise public attention around national issues, arguing that few people in Nigeria today possess the same level of influence.

“No one has the kind of influence VDM has in this generation,” Adeyanju wrote.

VDM’s Growing Influence

Over the past two years, VeryDarkMan has evolved from a controversial social media commentator into one of Nigeria’s most talked-about activists.

Known for his blunt style and willingness to challenge celebrities, government officials, religious leaders and public institutions, VDM has built a massive online following across multiple platforms.

His influence has extended beyond social media discussions into real-world activism, with several campaigns drawing national attention.

Supporters often describe him as a voice for ordinary Nigerians, while critics argue that some of his methods are confrontational and controversial.

Regardless of where people stand, few dispute the fact that VDM has become one of the country’s most recognisable digital personalities.

Ibadan Protest Sparks Fresh Conversation

Adeyanju’s comments came after VDM led a protest in Ibadan over the abduction of students and teachers.

The demonstration was aimed at drawing attention to ongoing security concerns and demanding stronger action from authorities to secure the release of victims and improve public safety.

Videos and photographs from the protest quickly circulated online, attracting widespread engagement from Nigerians concerned about the country’s security challenges.

Many social media users praised the activist for using his platform to highlight issues affecting ordinary citizens rather than focusing solely on entertainment-related controversies.

Why VDM Continues to Trend

One reason for VDM’s growing influence is his ability to keep public attention focused on issues that might otherwise receive limited coverage.

Whether discussing consumer complaints, corruption allegations, celebrity disputes or national security concerns, the activist has developed a reputation for speaking directly to topics that resonate with many Nigerians.

His supporters argue that his influence comes from consistency and a willingness to confront powerful individuals and institutions.

Others believe his appeal lies in his ability to communicate complex issues in a way that younger audiences can easily understand and engage with.

Mixed Reactions Online

Adeyanju’s statement quickly sparked debate across social media.

While many users agreed that VDM currently enjoys an unmatched level of influence among young Nigerians, others pointed to musicians, politicians, religious leaders and traditional celebrities who also command significant audiences.

Some commentators argued that influence should not be measured solely by social media engagement, while others maintained that VDM’s ability to convert online support into offline action sets him apart.

The discussion highlights the growing role social media personalities play in shaping public discourse and mobilising citizens around issues affecting the country.

A New Era of Digital Influence

The exchange between Adeyanju and VDM’s supporters reflects a broader shift in how influence is measured in modern Nigeria.

Traditional institutions such as political parties, religious organisations and mainstream media no longer hold a monopoly on public attention.

Increasingly, digital creators and activists are shaping conversations, influencing opinions and driving engagement on issues ranging from governance to social justice.

Whether one agrees with his methods or not, VeryDarkMan’s prominence in Nigeria’s digital landscape continues to grow, and Adeyanju’s latest remarks have only added to the conversation surrounding his impact on a generation of young Nigerians.
