A man who claims to have personally known both President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has sparked conversations online after sharing his assessment of the two political figures during a recent interview.
The man, who appeared on a podcast hosted by digital creator Emir Sirdam, said he attended the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) at the same time as Peter Obi and later worked in the banking sector where he became familiar with Tinubu during his corporate career.
According to him, he was also a roommate of former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Godwin Emefiele during his university days.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s past and present, the interviewee expressed disappointment with his generation, arguing that they inherited a far more functional country but failed to preserve the opportunities they enjoyed for younger Nigerians.
“The reason I’m ashamed of my generation is that my generation enjoyed Nigeria so well and instead of leaving Nigeria better, we are leaving Nigeria worse than we met it,” he said.
He recalled a period when students enjoyed government scholarships, education was more affordable, and employment opportunities were readily available after graduation.
According to him, many Nigerians of his generation benefited from those opportunities but failed to build institutions capable of sustaining similar advantages for future generations.
The man went on to describe how he entered the banking industry after graduation, explaining that Godwin Emefiele encouraged him to join the profession because of the attractive salaries available at the time.
While recounting his banking experience, he revealed that he became acquainted with Bola Tinubu during the latter’s corporate career.
“At that time, Tinubu was the Chief Accountant of Mobil, Emefiele was his account officer, and I was working under Emefiele. So, I knew Tinubu one to one,” he said.
He further claimed that his relationship with Peter Obi dated back to their university years.
“What I’m going to tell you is that I not only knew Tinubu very well, I also knew Peter Obi very well,” he added.
When asked which of the two men he believed would lead Nigeria more effectively, the interviewee openly endorsed Obi.
According to him, Nigerians should consider giving the former Anambra governor an opportunity to lead the country.
“I’ve seen both of them clearly and closely and that’s the reason I’m telling Nigerians, if only you can give Peter Obi a chance. After four years, I swear, if he leaves, you’re going to call him back saying, ‘Oga, you can’t go’,” he stated.
He cited the performance of Abia State Governor Alex Otti as an example of how leadership can make a noticeable difference within a relatively short period.
“It doesn’t take eight years to make an impact,” he added.
The comments have generated mixed reactions online, particularly among supporters of the major political parties. While some social media users agreed with his assessment, others argued that personal experiences do not necessarily determine a person’s ability to govern a complex country like Nigeria.
The remarks come as political conversations around Nigeria’s future leadership continue to intensify ahead of the next electoral cycle, with Peter Obi remaining one of the most discussed opposition figures in the country.
Although the interviewee’s views represent a personal opinion rather than an objective evaluation, the comments have added another perspective to the ongoing debate about leadership, governance, and Nigeria’s future direction.
