The Nigerian Senate has officially distanced itself from controversial remarks made by Senator Adams Oshiomhole in which he described the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) as a “house of thieves” and accused the organisation of having a reputation for fraud.
The upper legislative chamber clarified that Oshiomhole’s comments were made in his personal capacity and do not represent the official position, findings, or resolutions of the Senate.
The clarification follows growing reactions generated by the lawmaker’s comments during a Senate Public Accounts Committee session investigating alleged financial irregularities involving the state-owned oil company.
How the Controversy Started
The controversy erupted during a tense hearing of the Senate Public Accounts Committee, which is examining allegations surrounding the management of trillions of naira within NNPCL.
During the proceedings, Umar Ajiya, a former Chief Financial Officer of the company, reportedly claimed that some public officials had pressured the organisation to employ their children.
Reacting sharply, Oshiomhole dismissed the claim and launched a scathing attack on the company’s reputation.
According to the former Edo State governor, those seeking employment opportunities for their children at NNPCL were motivated by perceptions that the organisation was involved in widespread financial misconduct.
The comments quickly circulated online, sparking debate across social media platforms and political circles.
Senate Rejects Remarks
During plenary on Thursday, lawmakers moved to formally dissociate the Senate from Oshiomhole’s statements.
Several senators argued that such comments could be interpreted as prejudicial and damaging to individuals and institutions that have not been found guilty of wrongdoing through due process.
The Senate emphasized that investigations into NNPCL remain ongoing and that conclusions should be based on evidence rather than personal opinions.
Lawmakers maintained that while members are entitled to express their views, those views should not be mistaken for the official stance of the National Assembly.
Colleagues Criticise Oshiomhole
The remarks also drew criticism from senior lawmakers.
Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro were among those who reportedly cautioned Oshiomhole against making statements that could be perceived as defamatory.
Some senators reportedly urged him to withdraw the comments, arguing that public officials should exercise restraint while investigations are still underway.
The exchange highlighted growing tensions surrounding the ongoing probe into NNPCL’s finances and governance.
Senate Withdraws Warrant Against Mele Kyari
In a related development, the Senate also withdrew a warrant of arrest earlier issued by the Public Accounts Committee against former NNPCL Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari.
The warrant had been issued over allegations that Kyari failed to honour invitations from the committee.
The decision to withdraw the warrant came during Thursday’s proceedings, although lawmakers indicated that oversight activities concerning the oil company would continue.
Why This Matters
NNPCL remains one of Nigeria’s most important public institutions, playing a central role in the country’s oil and gas industry.
Allegations of financial mismanagement within the company often attract national attention because of the potential impact on government revenue, public trust, and economic stability.
The Senate’s decision to distance itself from Oshiomhole’s remarks underscores the importance lawmakers place on ensuring investigations are conducted within legal and institutional frameworks.
Background
The Senate Public Accounts Committee has been reviewing financial records and transactions linked to NNPCL as part of its oversight responsibilities.
Questions surrounding transparency, accountability, and revenue management within the oil sector have remained a recurring issue in Nigeria’s public discourse for years.
The latest hearing became particularly controversial due to Oshiomhole’s comments, which generated widespread reactions across the political landscape.
What Happens Next?
The Senate committee is expected to continue its investigation into the affairs of NNPCL and may invite additional officials and stakeholders to provide clarification on issues under review.
Meanwhile, attention will remain on whether Oshiomhole responds to calls from fellow lawmakers urging him to retract his remarks.
The outcome of the ongoing probe could also influence future discussions about transparency and governance reforms within Nigeria’s oil sector.
