The United States government has intensified efforts to combat birth tourism, revoking hundreds of visas linked to individuals accused of using visitor permits primarily to secure American citizenship for children born on U.S. soil.
The move forms part of a broader immigration enforcement campaign aimed at dismantling organized networks that allegedly help foreign nationals travel to the United States for childbirth.
In a statement released on June 10, the U.S. Department of State said it was taking action to protect what it described as the integrity of American citizenship.
“Under President Trump, the State Department is defending the integrity of U.S. citizenship by ending illegal birth tourism schemes,” the department said.
Officials reiterated that obtaining a visitor visa for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States violates visa regulations.
Hundreds of Visas Revoked Across Multiple Regions
According to the State Department, investigations uncovered several networks operating across different parts of the world.
Authorities disclosed that more than 100 visas were revoked in West Africa following the discovery of a network allegedly using fraudulent documentation and visa facilitators to secure travel approvals.
The department said the operation was dismantled after investigators identified individuals suspected of abusing the visa process.
In Europe, officials traced more than 400 suspected cases to multiple companies accused of helping clients prepare misleading visa applications and travel arrangements.
The State Department alleged that some operators coached applicants on how to answer visa interview questions, organized accommodation in the United States, and coordinated childbirth-related logistics.
Meanwhile, more than 100 visas were reportedly revoked in North Africa following separate investigations into individuals suspected of travelling primarily to give birth in the United States.
How Birth Tourism Works
Birth tourism refers to the practice of travelling to another country specifically to give birth, allowing a child to obtain citizenship where birthright citizenship laws apply.
The United States grants citizenship to most children born on its soil regardless of their parents’ nationality or immigration status.
While giving birth in the United States is not illegal, immigration authorities maintain that applicants must not misrepresent the purpose of their travel when applying for visas.
Officials argue that deliberately concealing plans related to childbirth can constitute visa fraud.
Authorities Target Organised Networks
The latest enforcement effort appears focused not only on individual travellers but also on businesses and intermediaries accused of facilitating birth tourism operations.
According to the State Department, investigators worked with law enforcement agencies and used data analysis tools to identify patterns linked to suspected abuse of the visa system.
The agency said several operators involved in the schemes have been permanently barred from entering the United States.
Officials added that cooperation with local authorities in affected countries helped uncover additional cases and prevent further abuse.
